Research
Hydrodynamic imaging is a specific ability of some aquatic animals to establish a three-dimensional map of the surrounding environment by sensing the velocity and pressure variations of the neighboring fluid field, even if vision or other sensing systems are limited or no use. Due to the complex underwater environment, it is difficult for the available acoustic and optical sensory systems that have been widely employed by autonomous underwater autonomous vehicles (AUVs) or bio-inspired robotic fish to satisfy the demand of obtaining sufficiently accurate information of the environment. However, relative engineering applications of hydrodynamic imaging are still in a developing stage, due to some challenges including the achievement of real-time identification of the encountering vortices.
My research mainly focuses on the underlying hydrodynamic mechanisms behind detection and identification of the information about the near-field fluid field, and the improvement of present bio-inspired hydrodynamic imaging techniques through the employment of the Reinforcement Learning in order to achieve the long-distance detection where a major breakthrough has not yet been made.
