Mr. Wentao SONG was born in 1990 in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. He graduated from Yanshan University with a master’s degree, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. In 2018, he was appointed as an assistant engineer in Machinery Technology Promotion Station of Inner Mongolia Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Department. In 2019, he was admitted to Zhejiang University–Westlake University Joint PhD Program, and joined Professor Weicheng Cui’s research group (Deep-Sea Technology Research Center, DSTRC). Until now, he has published 6 SCI papers as the first author and has got two authorized invention patents.
Wentao SONG’s research direction focuses on deep-ocean engineering equipment design, mainly including two relevant fields: deep-ocean pressure simulator (DOPS) and underwater wet-mateable connector (WMC).
DOPS is the land-based test platform for all deep-ocean engineering equipment, which is the direct embodiment of foundational capability of deep-ocean testing. For the development of deep-ocean equipment, the innovative concept about the design of DOPSs with multi-functions must be formed. Wentao SONG has presented a relatively systematic design theory and method of DOPS for the first time. He has developed DSTRC101 Deep-Ocean Pressure Simulation System with multi-functions, which integrates quick-actuating closures with automatic control, underwater high-definition cameras and high-precision strain measuring devices. Some design concepts and technical innovations in this system may be the first attempt in relevant fields in China.
Underwater wet-mateable connectors (WMCs) can be mated/de-mated in a harsh environment under the sea. It is widely used in the oil and gas industry, offshore renewable energy and undersea observatories, which is of great significance to the maintenance of national energy and defense security. Due to the technical blockage from several developed countries, WMC has become one of the 35 bottleneck techniques in China. Wentao SONG has presented the theoretical research on the key and core technologies of WMCs, including pressure-balanced oil-filled (PBOF), penetrable self-sealing (PSS), automatic interlocking/docking (AID), etc. He has developed a prototype of electrical WMC successfully, which has passed the test in the depth level of 3,000 m. The technical level of this prototype reaches the leading position of China and approaches the specifications of the top-class products. He also has developed a resilient bladder used in PBOF technology and a prototype of deep-ocean pressure compensator. The bladder and the prototype of the compensator can be used in the depth level of 6,500 m at least, which is the first time in China.
